Billed as their final encounter, The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar will settle the score once and for all as they collide in one of the most anticipated Hell in a Cell matches in recent memory. Will ‘The Deadman’ succeed in scoring a decisive victory over his longtime nemesis, or will Lesnar complete his ‘Go to Hell Tour’ with another triumph over one of the industry’s greatest superstars? Also, what else can we expect to happen at this year’s event?
WWE Tag Team Championship
The New Day © vs. The Dudley Boyz
The third match between the two teams in almost as many months, The New Day will seek to continue their second reign as champions against a team who might just be the greatest in tag team history. Completely revitalised and now producing their best work, Woods, Kingston and Big E are one of the best things going in the WWE at the moment so taking the titles off them really wouldn’t make much sense. A clean win over the recently returned legends is just what The New Day need right now to legitimise their reign, and should be one of the dead certain outcomes of the night.
Pick: The New Day
Intercontinental Championship
Kevin Owens © vs. Ryback
Like most I was pleasantly surprised to see Kevin Owens win the title at last month’s Night of Champions, but unfortunately the manner in which he did it was disappointing to say the least. Without a doubt Owens is the man to bring some luster back to the sorely misused belt so don’t expect the former champ to regain the title here. Ryback will again prove a tough challenge for the new champion, but Owens should retain, and in a manner far more decisive than their initial encounter.
Pick: Kevin Owens
Divas Championship
Charlotte © vs. Nikki Bella
With the ‘Divas Revolution’ unravelling at the seams thanks to the same dire writing that has crippled the division for years, now is the time for the WWE to start giving us matches that are up to the standard of what these women are truly capable of. Whether or not we get what we want remains to be seen, but this rematch is the perfect opportunity to reset the whole saga. I don’t see Charlotte dropping the belt just a month after capturing it, but with Paige’s recent ‘turn’ and the WWE’s soft spot for the former champion obvious, another Nikki title run wouldn’t be completely shocking.
Pick: Charlotte
United States Open
John Cena © vs. ?
For the second month in a row we have a mystery participant gimmick match. Perhaps this is the WWE’s way of injecting the event with a little intrigue, enough to convince fans to tune into what has been a poorly built show. The United States Open has been a real highlight since Cena introduced the segment earlier in the year. With the champion due to take a leave of absence following the show the prediction should be that we’re almost guaranteed a new champion, but this is John Cena, and betting against the 15-time world champ is never a wise idea. His opponent could be anyone: Cesaro, Dean Ambrose, Chris Jericho, Tyler Breeze (The fan favourite pick) or maybe even Baron Corbin or Samoa Joe (My preferred pick), but it doesn’t really matter. The WWE hasn’t had a problem with an absent champion before, so why would they strip their top guy of the belt for a couple of months? LOLCENAWINS.
Pick: John Cena
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Seth Rollins © vs. Kane
Less a match for the organization's top prize, and more a sad sign of just how malnourished the WWE’s main event scene is these days. Fans are calling for the 48-year old Kane to retire from active completion, not compete for the World Heavyweight title. Rollins will obviously win here and hopefully wrap up the whole ‘Corporate/Demon Kane’ storyline. The WWE wanted to continue to build Rollins as a despicable, slimy heel champion, so why is he constantly being booked in a manner that will make modern audiences cheer for him?
Pick: Seth Rollins
Hell in a Cell match
Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt
Once upon a time Hell in a Cell was used primary as the final resting place for a long-running feud, and with Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt meeting inside the structure, it looks as if the legendary match type is finally about to be used correctly again. Reigns and Wyatt have been going back and forth for seemingly forever now and it’ll be nice to see these two superstars move onto pastures new following this match. Both really could do with the victory to maintain momentum, but of the two it’s the babyface Reigns who’ll likely pick up the win with a main event programme likely his next destination. One thing is almost certain: With the cell being used correctly at last, look for these two to deliver a match of the night contender as they seek to end their rivalry on a positive note.
Pick: Roman Reigns
Hell in a Cell match
The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar
The match that no-one really wanted, but no-one will complain about either way; The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar will finally end their epic feud with a match that many were expecting to see at next year’s WrestleMania. Their encounter at SummerSlam for the most part exceeded expectations and more than made up for their lacklustre, but infamous showing at WrestleMania XXX, but the finish of the match was one of the worst in recent memory and very nearly derailed the entire event. The Hell in a Cell format should remove any controversy, and hopefully, provide us with a clear, definitive winner.
Let’s make one thing clear: This will not be a worthy sequel to their brilliant Hell in a Cell match at No Mercy from 2002 but, despite a guaranteed lack of gore, still has the potential to be one of the most dramatic, and violent clashes in the PG-era. With this likely being their last match together, expect ‘Taker to do what’s best for business and do the job for a superstar who is still a legitimate, and believable main event draw. Lesnar should win, but not before his legendary foe puts him through (the PG equivalent of) hell.
Pick: Brock Lesnar
