Predicting WWE Battleground

With previous Battleground events leaving, let’s say, a lot to be desired, WWE have really gone out of their way to shatter our preconceived notions with this year’s offering. A taste of the blockbusters we can hope to expect at SummerSlam, Battleground currently features 5 tantalising main card matches, but how might they pan out come this Sunday?

Tag Team Championship
The Prime Time Players © vs. The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and/or Xavier Woods)

The decision to remove the tag belts from the WWE’s latest heel trio last month was an usual one. Easily the tag division’s most interesting attraction, The New Day are flourishing despite initial widespread concerns. The Prime Time Players might be a popular tandem, but they really haven’t done anything with their new position as champions. A victory for The New Day should help restore both the team’s heat, and reignite much-needed fan interest in the division.

Winner: The New Day

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus

This should be a no-brainer...but the WWE has a history of proving me wrong (just look at my damn predictions tally for this year!). Usually booked to look exceptional, expect that and then some as Orton once again performs in front of his hometown fans. The owner of the Money in the Bank contract has traditionally been booked to look weak before a surprise cash-in, and I believe this will be the case once again here. Orton is a miserable 1-3 in PPV appearances this year, so expect him to nail Sheamus with an RKO for an obligatory hometown triumph.

Winner: Randy Orton

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt

A highly intriguing match considering the respective positions of these feuding superstars. As the future posterboy for the WWE, Roman Reigns will be booked to look as strong as possible as often as possible, but a little humanity is just what a hero needs every once in a while to give the kids someone to look up to (ugh). Bray Wyatt has exposed that with their storyline going into Sunday’s event, and considering his torrid record lately he desperately needs a victory to keep him in the WWE’s main event mix. Wyatt to win to set up an eventual Reigns feud victory at SummerSlam is what should happen...but a Reigns victory wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Winner: Bray Wyatt

United States Championship

John Cena © vs. Kevin Owens

Essentially ending his NXT tenure after dropping the title in Japan earlier this month, Kevin Owens will seek to solidify his presence on the main roster with a decisive victory over arch-nemesis John Cena. Owens and Cena have delivered the match of the night in their last two consecutive outings so expect another stunning match to end their feud. Love him or hate him it really doesn’t matter; John Cena has succeeded in raising the profile of the once-neglected United States title, but with the main event scene still his natural placement on the card, expect the former 15-time world champion to give Owens the rub here.

Winner: Kevin Owens

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Seth Rollins © vs. Brock Lesnar

Probably one of the most unpredictable main events the WWE has had in a long time, Brock Lesnar will seek to regain the WWE World Heavyweight belt against a champion who might not have the backup he’s relied on time and time again. On paper things look grim for Seth Rollins: He’s facing a mammoth super athlete, known worldwide for his legitimate fighting acumen, a certified box office giant and the only man the WWE saw fit to end the legendary WrestleMania streak of The Undertaker. The ‘Future of the WWE’ needs a miracle to retain his title.

Rollins reminds me, and a lot of other fans of Edge; a superstar who despite the odds, always found a way to win. There is no way, kayfabe or not, that Rollins will go over Lesnar clean, but I doubt the WWE will want their top prize disappearing again for months on end. It’s also probably not the right time for Sheamus to cash in his contract, especially with the second biggest PPV just around the corner. The most educated guess would be that Lesnar somehow wins, but doesn’t leave Battleground with the belt.

Winner: Brock Lesnar
